The Missing Chapter
BLACK CHRONICLES

10 - 22 October 2017

Lewisham Library

London, UK

Free exhibition

Autograph ABP’s Exhibition in a Box is on display in Lewisham, giving local residents the chance to see rare photographic portraits of African, Caribbean and South Asian lives in Victorian Britain.

In partnership with Lewisham Library and Information Service, we are bringing these portraits, previously unseen for over 125 years, out of the archive for the community to explore.

The Missing Chapter  offers a unique snapshot of black lives in Britain during the decades following the birth of photography in 1839. This includes a diverse range of performers, politicians, royalty and missionaries; known personalities and many as yet unidentified individuals. The collection sheds new light on the nation’s colonial and imperial history.

About The Exhibition In A Box

Autograph ABP’s Exhibition in a Box is a pop-up archive exhibition display for use across a wide range of spaces, including community centres, schools, colleges and public libraries. It comprises 30 remarkable A3 image panels produced from rare photographs of people of African, Caribbean and South Asian descent during the Victorian era in Britain. These archival photographs were unearthed during our three-year research project The Missing Chapter and we are now bringing them into community spaces to promote cultural diversity through photography.

About The Missing Chapter

The Missing Chapter research project aims to bring together a distinct body of photographs that showcases diverse ‘black presences’ in Victorian and Edwardian Britain.  Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund over three years (2013-16) images are identified through new curatorial research, and by working collaboratively with national archives and collections, both public and private.

An important aspect of The Missing Chapter project’s mission is to introduce its findings to new environments and audiences outside galleries or museum spaces. This includes pop up exhibitions, events, formal and informal learning activities, as well as the creation of new educational resources.
