The artist as historian, archaeologist and archivist

Wed 21 June, 6.30 - 7.30pm

Autograph ABP

London, UK

Talk, £2

Joshua Lue Chee Kong (Trinidad and Tobago) is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher and collector whose work focuses on Caribbean narratives around colonialism and the way it has shaped the social fabric of the region.

Currently in London on the Transatlantic Artists’ Residency Exchange, he is focusing on the memory of objects and how they provide glimpses into the past.

As an artist he has taken on many unofficial roles: historian, archaeologist, archivist – documenting the last remnants of the British Colonial era in Trinidad and Tobago. It is an era that is vastly neglected due to its problematic ties to imperialism.

Join us for a discussion on his discoveries, and how his many roles in Trinidad and Tobago have influenced his practice as an artist.

About the project

Kong is the first recipient of the Transatlantic Artists’ Residency Exchange (TAARE) programme initiated by the British Council Caribbean working in collaboration with Delfina Foundation and Autograph ABP.

Whilst at Delfina Foundation, Joshua will research and explore Autograph’s archives with a focus on the memory of objects and how they provide glimpses into the past and develop a new project based on the relations between British Empire and Trinidad Tobago in the 19th century.

About the artist

Kong received a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

His works have been published in Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas, ANNO, See Me Here: A Survey of Contemporary Self-Portraits from the Caribbean, The Draconian Switch and TIME.
