FREE SUMMER TERM WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOLS / FE / HE
Raphael Albert: Miss Black and Beautiful

Fri 8 July - Fri 22 July 2016

Rivington Place

London, UK

Free learning workshops

Book your class or group for a fun, hands-on workshop exploring the unique work of the late Raphael Albert, photographer and cultural promoter of beauty pageants and other cultural events in west London’s black community.

For more than two decades, from the 1960s to the early 80s, Raphael Albert documented hundreds of popular dance, music and community events in west London’s black community. His images present us with important ‘missing histories’ of how beauty, the black body and self-identity were affirmed, challenging dominant stereotypes of how such communities were often represented. Yet Albert’s images, at times melancholic, also ask us to reflect on how young women were portrayed, and where the boundaries between empowerment and exploitation lie, in presenting their bodies to the camera.

Workshops will last 1hr 30mins and take place in the gallery at Autograph ABP, Rivington Place, EC2A 3BA.

We can also offer:

- A free artist-led workshop delivered at your school!
- A free Archive Learning Resource! (with unique photographic material and teaching activities for KS2 - 5 across subjects including History, Art and Design and Citizenship)

Feedback from teachers about our workshops

Really enjoyed the exhibition and workshop. I hope it helped to broaden the students minds on how history was documented and how powerful the images can be in linking the past to the present.

Thanks so much…The children really thought deeply about the trip - good discussions about travel, black and white photography, confidence, identity, legacy, justice etc. when we got back.

Ali is a superb facilitator, very gentle and approachable, well organised and professional and and ever so patient with students

Definitely the highlight of the term

Excellent workshop well planned and executed. Lots of things to think about.

The interactive elements were fantastic and of course, the exhibit was amazing!

provocative and took some time to take in – the pacing of the workshop was just right for this to happen
